A data platform to map Wellington’s underground pipes and cables was launched, promising significant savings for infrastructure organizations. The Underground Asset Register for Wellington aims to centralize and digitize data from various utility operators, replacing outdated records with a comprehensive online map. This initiative, backed by the Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative, is projected to save millions annually by reducing disruptions, avoiding asset strikes, and streamlining construction projects.

Council analysis reveals that over 70% of infrastructure companies face issues with current data, costing the sector over $50 million in delays and safety incidents. The platform should enhance accuracy, improve safety, and facilitate better planning, benefiting both businesses and residents. Wellington’s ambitious infrastructure program will leverage this register to maintain project timelines and budgets.

This collaborative effort marks a significant step towards a digital twin of Wellington’s underground infrastructure, aiming for full scalability across New Zealand.
