Japanese trading house Itochu is joining a smart city project in Tainan, Taiwan, trialing AI systems for transportation and energy data management. Itochu won a USD 332,000 early-stage contract and aims to roll out systems by October.

Collaborating with Accton Technology and National Cheng Kung University, Itochu will optimize routes for electric buses, analyze passenger reservations, and install systems for monitoring foot traffic with cameras mounted on poles and generating solar power. Itochu is also expected to manage data on wind and solar power.

By participating to this pilot Itochu hopes to be able to secure a slice in the USD 330 million AI related projects the Taiwanese government is planning to announce.
