Spanish Ministry of Digital Transformation has announced a €13 million grant to the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP) to build municipal data centers dedicated to smart city infrastructure. This initiative aims to support local governments in managing urban services such as traffic, water, and energy more effectively. Through data sharing between municipalities, the project seeks to enhance service delivery across Spain.

The initiative will initially focus on three use cases:

  1. Smart Mobility: Optimizing traffic flow to reduce congestion and pollution, creating more sustainable and efficient cities.
  2. Resource Management: Improving the efficiency of critical resources like energy and water, contributing to lower costs and greater sustainability.
  3. Economic and Social Planning: Strengthening city cohesion and better planning to foster more connected and well-organized communities.

Spain is facing significant challenges in areas such as water conservation, making digital solutions vital for managing resources sustainably. The project should enable municipalities to share insights and data, allowing for a more integrated approach across different regions.

While the project will involve data platforms and digital infrastructure to facilitate smart city functions, specific details about a centralized smart city platform have not been disclosed. However, the FEMP’s role suggests a coordinated approach to enable municipalities to leverage shared data for a range of urban services. The aim is to make digitalization work for citizens, ensuring that technology enhances everyday life rather than requiring people to adjust to it.
