The U.S. Department of the Interior has allocated $223 million from President Biden’s “Investing in America” agenda to advance water recycling and desalination projects. Funded through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and annual appropriations, the initiative will support 18 projects across eight states under the Title XVI Water Reclamation and Reuse and Desalination Programs. These efforts are expected to generate over 305,000 acre-feet of recycled water annually, enhancing resilience to drought and climate change.
The Investing in America agenda, marking the largest climate resilience investment in U.S. history, is channeling $8.3 billion over five years into water infrastructure projects, including rural water systems, conservation efforts, dam safety, and purification technologies. Since its enactment three years ago, the Bureau of Reclamation has committed nearly $5.3 billion to more than 670 projects aimed at bolstering water security.
One featured project is the Foss Reservoir Master Conservancy District in Oklahoma, which received $7.5 million to upgrade its water treatment plant. The enhancements will increase capacity by 25%, ensuring a more reliable water supply and better preparedness for drought and climate-related challenges.
