Orange County’s District 12 (D12) is set to enhance road safety with an advanced AI-powered intersection safety system deployed by Econolite and Derq in partnership with California Department of Transportation (Caltrans). Covering 52 signalized intersections, this large-scale project integrates Econolite’s Autoscope® Vision, a high-definition video-based detection system, with Derq’s real-time AI analytics to monitor traffic patterns, identify high-risk areas, and enhance signal safety.
The system employs AI, real-time data, and predictive analytics to provide detailed safety and usage insights, including traffic volumes, signal compliance, and near-miss incidents involving vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists. This information allows for dynamic adjustments of signal operations and broadcasts safety alerts to connected vehicles, cellular devices, and intelligent infrastructure, enhancing traffic flow and reducing collision risks.
Econolite’s EOS Advanced Traffic Controller software utilizes data gathered from Derq’s AI platform to react to both immediate situations and long-term conditions, enabling local agencies to make data-driven decisions about traffic management and roadway improvements. This initiative aligns with Caltrans’ Vision Zero goal of eliminating fatal and serious injury crashes on state roadways by 2050, as outlined in the 2023-2024 Road Safety Action Plan.
