Australian telco TPG Telecom has secured a ten-year contract to deploy 1 million NB-IoT Smart Water Meter for South East Water, Victoria’s government-owned corporation. Valued at $87 million, the project will see the installation of  narrowband IoT-connected digital meters across South East Water’s 27,000km water pipe network. These advanced meters will enable near-real-time leak detection and provide daily updates on water consumption, allowing customers to better manage their usage and reduce bills.

The initiative is projected to save five billion liters of water annually and will serve 1.7 million customers from Port Melbourne to Portsea and Gippsland. The project is also part of a broader effort to build climate resilience into Australia’s water network, addressing challenges such as water scarcity and a growing population.
