LUMA Launches Next Phase of Smart Meter Initiative in Puerto Rico

LUMA the Puerto Rican company that operates and manages the electric power transmission and distribution system in Puerto Rico has announced a major milestone in its grid modernization efforts with the launch of the next phase of its Smart Meter Initiative. Partnering with Itron, LUMA will install over 1.5 million smart meters across Puerto Rico, starting in the San Juan region and extending island-wide over the next three years.

This initiative, which underwent a rigorous and open procurement process, includes creating more than 150 local jobs and deploying cutting-edge grid intelligence capabilities. The new system will enhance grid reliability, improve energy efficiency, and enable better integration of renewable energy sources, such as rooftop solar and battery storage.

The project promises no rate increases for customers and includes a 15-year warranty on the smart meter technology.
