LoRaWAN network operator Netmore Group and Vantage Towers, a provider of telecommunications tower infrastructure in Europe, have announced a strategic partnership to deliver national LoRaWAN connectivity across Portugal. This initiative aims to support digital transformation and sustainability efforts for utilities, municipalities, and other organizations.

Portugal faces significant challenges in water management due to record droughts and water scarcity, particularly in the southern Algarve region, where reservoirs are only 20% full on average. According to ERSAR, the country’s national water supply and sanitation agency, nearly a third of Portugal’s water is lost through leaks, theft, or illicit use. To address these issues, water utilities are increasingly adopting Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), utilizing LoRaWAN technology for water metering, leak detection, and identifying usage irregularities.

Under this partnership, Netmore will deploy gateways on Vantage Towers’ extensive infrastructure, leveraging its Network-as-a-Service model to expand and densify its carrier-grade public LoRaWAN network. Vantage Towers operates more than 84,000 sites across Europe, including over 3,500 in Portugal.
