The Department for the Economy has unveiled proposals for the rollout of approximately 920,000 smart electricity meters across homes and businesses in Northern Ireland. The plan follows a cost-benefit analysis that indicated a benefit-cost ratio of 1.6 for electricity smart meters, with a net present value of £301 million, while gas smart meters were deemed less viable.
Northern Ireland Electricity Networks (NIEN) is expected to manage the procurement, installation, and development of a new data management system for smart meters, continuing its current role. An oversight group, including the Department of Economy, the Utility Regulator, and consumer representatives, will ensure the necessary regulatory framework, set rollout metrics, and prioritize deployment.
The plan emphasizes consumer protection, allowing consumers to control access to their data and contribute to the design of the metering system. A public communication campaign is also proposed to drive consumer engagement and the consultation will remain open until 12 December 2024.
