The Spanish government has approved a second round of funding totaling €155 million for sustainable municipal lighting projects, aiming to enhance street lighting across cities. Managed by the Institute for Diversification and Energy Savings (IDAE), the initiative targets municipalities, provincial councils, and local entities to transition to energy-efficient LED lighting systems.
LED streetlights consume up to 50% less energy than traditional lighting, significantly reducing carbon emissions and dependence on fossil fuels. Additionally, their long lifespan lowers maintenance costs and minimizes bulb replacements, allowing savings to be redirected to vital public services like education and transportation.
The new funding offers interest-free loans repayable over ten years, covering up to 100% of eligible investments. This support follows the successful first round, which allocated €100 million to over 40 innovative projects, achieving an average energy savings of 70%. The second call for applications will be open from January 27 to March 20, 2025.
IDAE aims to surpass the first round’s achievements, targeting energy savings of approximately 67,000 MWh annually and reducing CO₂ emissions by 18,600 tonnes each year. The program also encourages the integration of smart city technologies, such as centralized lighting management and internet-connected networks, to further optimize energy use.
This initiative is part of the broader Energy and Climate Integrated National Plan, emphasizing energy efficiency and environmental sustainability in public infrastructure.
