San Jose is using a $260,000 grant from the Toyota Mobility Foundation to deploy AI and computer vision technologies citywide, focusing on high-risk areas to detect and address road hazards more efficiently. The AI system will automatically identify obstacles such as illegally parked vehicles in bike lanes and unexpected debris that can cause accidents. This technology is part of San Jose’s broader safety initiatives, including the Vision Zero plan, which aims to eliminate all traffic-related deaths and severe injuries by enhancing infrastructure and leveraging advanced technology solutions. US Ignite, a nonprofit dedicated to helping communities address tough technology innovation challenges, will support San José leaders in this endeavor with resources, expert guidance, and specific expertise in public safety, transportation, network communications, civic engagement, and AI.
