Scottish Water Installs 1,000 New Sewer Monitors to Enhance Environmental Protection

Scottish Water has successfully installed 1,000 new Event Duration Monitors across its sewer network as part of a £500 million investment program aimed at transforming the country’s wastewater infrastructure and safeguarding the environment.

The new technology provides unprecedented data on the performance of the wastewater system, enabling the company to prevent flooding and pollution more effectively. The installation is a key component of Scottish Water’s Improving Urban Waters Routemap, which includes plans to add another 700 monitors by next year. Additionally, an interactive online overflow map will soon launch, offering near real-time information on sewer overflows accessible to local communities.

Cabinet Secretary Martin highlighted the initiative’s impact, noting that 86.5% of Scotland’s water environment is now classified as high or good quality, up from 82% in 2014. The new monitors and dedicated team will play a crucial role in adapting to climate change and extreme weather, ensuring Scotland’s sewer system remains resilient.
