The City of Elmira has taken a significant step in enhancing public safety with the deployment of advanced gunshot detection cameras. Installed in late December, the system is designed to help police quickly identify and respond to shooting incidents.
The new system, developed by Flock Safety, includes microphones and AI technology that should enable it to pinpoint the location of gunfire within approximately 90 feet. The system should also alerts officers or the communication center even when no 911 calls are made.
The detection system covers around one square mile and integrates with the Elmira Police Department’s license plate readers. This synergy should allow officers to identify vehicles in the vicinity of a shooting, aiding investigations and leading to quicker resolutions. The technology operates using sound decibel analysis and artificial intelligence, ensuring privacy by only preserving audio in the event of gunfire.
In September, the Elmira City Council approved a two-year subscription to Flock Safety’s Raven Detection System for $66,553.85. Since its activation, the system has already assisted in one shooting incident.
