New Project (Full-Scale)United KingdomVirgin Media O2Liberty GlobalConnectivity5GSmart Poles
Published on March 20, 2024
Virgin Media O2, along with Liberty Global, is deploying smart poles by its fibre network cabinets to boost mobile coverage in the UK. These poles use small cell technology and ‘digital electricity’ from the fibre network, avoiding conventional power needs. This quick-install solution, possible in less than a day without planning permission, aims to enhance mobile service in crowded areas. With 25,000 street cabinets across the UK, there are many potential locations for these poles, however, small cell deployment has had its hurdles, leading to creative solutions like integrating technology in streetlights or smart bins in various cities. This move by Virgin Media O2 is part of broader efforts to seamlessly blend mobile infrastructure into urban spaces to tackle service challenges.
