Autopistas, an Abertis subsidiary in Spain, in collaboration with the i2CAT Foundation, will jointly develop the DIMOS 5G project, aimed at establishing a digital smart road on the C-32 highway. This project, with a total budget of €591,837, of which €250,110 is funded by the Spanish Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Function, seeks to enhance traffic flow, road safety, and reduce environmental impact through digital technologies.

The project leverages 5G communications and vehicular wireless connection technologies, including the use of digital twins for real-time monitoring and management of traffic conditions. This development should particularly benefit tunnel environments on the highway, where 5G infrastructure is expected to significantly improve safety and operational capabilities.

DIMOS 5G is set to demonstrate its technologies through three primary use cases:

  • Improving traffic management to reduce congestion-related incidents.
  • Using digital twins for environmental impact mitigation by predicting and managing traffic-related pollution.
  • Enhancing emergency vehicle prioritization in tunnel accidents to test system connectivity and vehicle interaction.
