Türkiye is set to implement a nationwide Deposit Return System (DYS) in 2025, aiming to recycle 25 billion glass, PET, and aluminum beverage containers annually. This initiative, led by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change, is expected to contribute approximately €137 million to the economy each year.

Under the DYS, consumers will pay a deposit when purchasing beverages, refundable upon returning the empty containers. The system will initially feature 5,000 deposit return machines across the country, collecting a 25 kuruş (€0.01) deposit for each water, soda, cola, and beer bottle. Payments will be managed through an e-wallet, facilitated by the Real Estate Participation Bank of Türkiye, enabling citizens to use their accumulated deposits for shopping or other transactions.

The DYS is anticipated to deliver significant environmental benefits, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions, saving 1.3 billion kWh of energy, and conserving 3.6 million barrels of oil annually. Additionally, it is expected to create around 20,000 new jobs, strengthening the green economy.

As of now, specific details about the total project cost or specific vendors supplying the deposit machines have not been disclosed. The project is being managed by the Turkish Environmental Agency (TUCA) with support from key national organizations such as TOBB and TESK.
