Adelaide has introduced AI-powered cameras to reduce traffic congestion and enhance road safety in key suburbs. The new system, a first for South Australia, has been installed in Penfield, Paradise, and Old Noarlunga.
Developed by SAFEgroup Automation, the cameras monitor real-time traffic and adjust signals automatically to optimize flow. Data is relayed to the Department for Infrastructure and Transport’s Traffic Management Centre (TMC) for oversight.
Early results from Heaslip Road show fewer traffic delays and reduced rear-end collisions. With upcoming housing developments in Smithfield and Playford expected to add thousands of vehicles, the system aims to handle increased demand.
Plans are underway to expand the AI cameras along the Northern Expressway as part of long-term traffic management strategies.
