Google Research’s Project Green Light, an AI-based initiative to reduce traffic emissions, has expanded to 114 intersections in Boston.
The system analyzes traffic patterns using AI and Google Maps data to optimize traffic light timing. City engineers can apply these adjustments in minutes using current infrastructure. By synchronizing nearby intersections, the project aims to improve traffic flow and cut emissions from stop-and-go driving.
Launched in 2023, the program now operates in 18 cities worldwide. Early data suggests it could reduce stops by up to 30% and lower intersection emissions by 10%.
Google Research plans to expand the technology to more cities in the future.
