Australia Launches its Largest Smart Street Lighting Upgrade

New Project (Full-Scale)AustraliaAusgridStreet Lighting

Published on December 6, 2023

The Southern Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (SSROC) and 29 local councils, in collaboration with Ausgrid, are undertaking Australia’s largest smart street lighting upgrade. Over three years, more than 62,000 main road street lights will be replaced with energy-efficient LEDs and smart controls for fault detection, maintenance optimization, and potential future dimming. This follows Ausgrid’s replacement of 205,000 residential road lights across Sydney, the Central Coast, and Hunter regions. The project aims to reduce Ausgrid’s street light energy consumption by 69% by 2026 and includes provisions for future smart city sensors. This upgrade is expected to save communities millions annually while improving road safety and environmental impact.
