Cyprus has officially launched the Smart Cyprus project, a nationwide initiative to deploy unified smart city infrastructure across its municipalities and communities. Backed by €35 million from the EU Recovery and Resilience Facility, the project is coordinated by the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy in partnership with telecom operator Cyta, which was awarded the role of national platform operator following a competitive tender.

The project’s first implementation phase will roll out three digital solutions, smart lighting, smart parking, and smart waste management, across participating areas. A mobile application will also be introduced to improve citizen engagement and access to digital services. The funding covers not only new deployments but also compensates local authorities for previous investments in similar technologies, ensuring their integration within a central system.

Designed as a scalable and interoperable infrastructure, Smart Cyprus aims to streamline resource management, enhance public safety, and improve service delivery across the country. The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) is also involved in the initial phase. Future expansions are planned through a cost-modelling framework developed by Cyta under the ministry’s oversight, allowing the platform to continuously integrate additional solutions in areas such as health, environment, and mobility.

By unifying services under a single platform, the project seeks to avoid fragmented approaches and provide equal access to innovation for both large and small municipalities.
