Polish energy company Enea has secured over PLN 9 billion ($2.4 billion) in financing from Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego (BGK) to upgrade its distribution network with smart grid technology. The funding comes from Poland’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (KPO) and will support infrastructure development, including new and modernized power lines.

The investment aims to enhance grid reliability, integrate renewable energy sources, and expand communication systems for improved network operations. The project will cover nearly all areas served by Enea Operator, the group’s distribution subsidiary.

The loan is part of the Energy Support Fund, a key component of Poland’s energy transition strategy, with funds to be disbursed between 2025 and 2036. Enea plans to invest approximately PLN 41 billion (€9.5 billion) in its distribution network by 2035 to strengthen energy security and support renewable energy growth.

The modernization is expected to reduce outage risks and accommodate future energy demands, including distributed generation and electromobility.
