The Province of British Columbia is expanding a camera network designed to improve wildfire detection and emergency response through a partnership with the University of British Columbia Okanagan (UBCO). Following a successful trial in 2024 with PanoAI cameras, the government is investing $200,000 to deploy more cameras across the province.

The system uses 5G technology to detect smoke and provide real-time data, aiding in evacuation planning, resource allocation, and wildfire prediction. Artificial intelligence at UBCO analyzes the data to support first responders and emergency management efforts.

The Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness contributed an additional $50,000 to the initiative. Communities, local governments, and First Nations interested in participating can contact the BC Wildfire Service for details.

The expansion aims to reduce wildfire risks, lower suppression costs, and enhance public safety.
