To address rising retail crime and enhance safety in the North Leroy Street business district, the City of Fenton Police Department has introduced a new AI-powered video surveillance system. The system, equipped with camera-sharing technology, aims to improve emergency response times and deter criminal activity.
Fenton, a small city of 12,000 residents, sees an estimated 60,000 daily visitors due to its popularity as a shopping and dining hub near Highway US-23. The new surveillance system, housed in weatherproof cabinets and mounted on telephone poles, features Eagle Eye 911 Camera Sharing technology. This allows 911 dispatchers to access live security footage during emergencies through a partnership with RapidSOS, providing real-time information to law enforcement.
The system also includes AI-powered Smart Video Search, enabling authorized officials to quickly scan footage for specific vehicles, individuals, or objects. This technology is designed to assist in identifying suspects or tracking movements in retail areas.
This initiative involves several key vendors:
Eagle Eye Networks: A leading provider of cloud-based video surveillance solutions, Eagle Eye Networks supplied the system’s core technology. Their platform includes AI-powered features such as Smart Video Search, enabling law enforcement to efficiently search footage for specific individuals, vehicles, or objects. Additionally, their 911 Camera Sharing technology allows 911 dispatchers immediate access to live security feeds during emergencies, enhancing situational awareness and response times.
Elite Fire Safety: A division of Sciens Building Solutions based in Novi, Michigan, Elite Fire Safety served as the security integrator for this project. They were responsible for deploying and integrating the surveillance system within Fenton’s infrastructure. Their expertise ensured the seamless installation and functionality of the advanced security features.
RapidSOS: In partnership with Eagle Eye Networks, RapidSOS facilitates the 911 Camera Sharing technology. This collaboration provides Fenton’s 911 dispatch professionals with immediate access to live security camera footage during emergencies, thereby improving the quality and speed of information relayed to first responders.
The initiative comes amid a reported 93% increase in shoplifting incidents nationwide since 2019, according to the National Retail Federation. The new system is seen as a proactive measure to address growing retail crime and enhance community safety.
