Hawaiian Electric is installing high-resolution video cameras with AI technology for early fire detection in high-risk areas near company infrastructure. The project includes 78 camera stations across five islands, each with two cameras for a 360-degree view. ALERTWest, a California-based company, will install and monitor the cameras under a five-year contract. The project is partially funded by a $90 million federal grant from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. ALERTWest has experience with utility companies like Pacific Gas & Electric and Southern California Edison, and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
