Jordan has signed a preliminary agreement with a consortium led by French firms Meridiam and Suez to develop a significant water desalination project.
The initiative aims to produce 300 million cubic meters of drinking water annually by desalinating seawater from the Gulf of Aqaba and transporting it to the capital, Amman, through a 450-kilometer pipeline.
The project incorporates renewable energy components and will be financed, designed, constructed, operated, and maintained by the consortium for a 26-year concession period. After this period, the facility will be transferred to Jordan’s Ministry of Water and Irrigation.
Once operational, the plant is expected to supply enough water to meet the needs of approximately four million people, significantly reducing Jordan’s reliance on imported water from Israel.
