The León City Council has approved three new contracts totaling €932,000 to install additional streetlights and ornamental lighting in various parts of the city, including heritage buildings. This decision comes despite an existing privatized public lighting system, costing €21 million over ten years, which was established in 2017 through a PP-PSOE agreement.

The new contracts aim to improve energy efficiency and address community requests for better lighting in specific areas:

  • A €40,412.79 contract was awarded to Fernández de la Mata for €40,412.79, will enhance remote management of lighting systems to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions.
  • Another €358,295.52 contract was also awarded to Fernández de la Mata, targeting landmarks like San Marcos and the León Cathedral, which recently underwent a €223,585 LED upgrade.
  • The third contract was awarded to Sistelec for €533,344.63 and focuses on streets such as Avenida de La Facultad and Paseo Condesa de Sagasta.

Additionally, the council has allocated €328,024.02 for climate control upgrades at the León Oeste Civic Center and Puente Castro Sports Center, both of which face operational improvements despite recent inaugurations. A €136,006.42 contract was also awarded for perimeter fencing at the Participación Ciudadana Park.

These projects reflect ongoing efforts to modernize public infrastructure while managing costs under the privatized lighting system, which currently incurs monthly expenses of €173,241.
