Madrid Expands AI-Driven Surveillance with New Camera Installations

The Madrid City Council has invested approximately €2.8 million in deploying 83 AI-equipped surveillance cameras across the city. Operated by the Municipal Police, they are designed to enhance public safety by assisting in image analysis while ensuring privacy through strict regulations and monitoring protocols.

Recently, the central Dos de Mayo square added 16 new AI-equipped cameras, exceeding the initially planned 13. By year-end, 37 additional cameras are set to be deployed in various areas, pending approval from the Surveillance Commission.

Since Mayor Almeida took office, nearly 40% of the city’s 367 surveillance cameras have been installed, underscoring his administration’s focus on urban security and coexistence. Privacy remains a priority, with footage stored for 30 days and accessible only under judicial authorization. Informational signs accompany each camera to notify the public, adhering to strict legal frameworks.
