Marco Island has approved the implementation of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) to modernize its water system and improve billing accuracy.

The decision follows a citywide audit conducted in partnership with Johnson Controls, which revealed that many older mechanical meters were under-reporting usage, particularly in some condominium complexes.

The upgrade will replace 11,500 meters with ultrasonic smart meters that provide hourly data and automatic reporting through a secure radio network. Customers will gain access to real-time usage insights, leak alerts, and conservation tools via a web portal and mobile app. Full deployment is expected by early 2026, with billing system upgrades and digital platforms being developed in the interim.
