Menorca is moving forward with the second phase of its Smart Island initiative, which aims to install more than 3,500 smart devices by the 2026 summer season.
Backed by €1.65 million from ITS and Next Generation EU funds, the project includes smart water meters, traffic and parking sensors, video surveillance for archaeological sites, automated waste bins, and adaptive street lighting.
Over 3,000 of the devices will monitor water consumption, a critical issue for the island, while others will optimize traffic flow, manage electric vehicle parking, and regulate access to natural areas.
Additional sensors will track bicycle and pedestrian movements, and intelligent lighting will be tested along cycling routes to reduce energy use. The system is designed to improve public services, preserve cultural heritage, and support data-driven sustainability across the island.
Vendors involved in the implementation have not yet been disclosed.
