Metz has launched a pilot smart lighting project on Île du Saulcy, aiming to improve energy efficiency and reduce light pollution. The system, spanning 1.2 kilometers with 49 lamp posts along the Moselle River, uses motion sensors to activate lights only when pedestrians or cyclists pass by.
Each lamp operates at full brightness for one minute upon detecting movement before dimming to 50% in the following minute. If no further motion is detected, the lights gradually turn off. Equipped with astronomical clocks, the system automatically adjusts to sunrise and sunset times, removing the need for seasonal manual changes.
An ecologically conscious feature is the use of red lighting at 1000 Kelvin, designed to minimize disruption to nocturnal wildlife, such as bats, unlike conventional white or blue lights. Similar smart lighting initiatives have been implemented in other French cities, including Lyon and Angers.
While vendor details remain undisclosed, the project serves as a trial, with potential refinements based on performance and feedback.
