City of New York Upgrade Smart Water Meters to AMI

Published on December 9, 2024

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has embarked on an ambitious program to upgrade 600,000 Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) system to an Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) network. The modernization of water metering across the city aims to provide cutting-edge features for real-time monitoring, improved service, and operational efficiency.

The current AMR system, which transmits water consumption data periodically to DEP through a fixed network, will be replaced with an AMI network. The upgraded infrastructure will provide more robust capabilities, including:

  • Real-Time Monitoring: Enabling customers to access detailed water usage data online for better management and conservation.
  • Improved Leak Detection: Allowing faster identification of leaks and reducing water wastage.
  • Enhanced Service Quality: Ensuring consistent readings for accurate billing and better overall customer experience.

The DEP’s approved vendors for water meters and related equipment include:

Aclara Technologies is providing the network infrastructure, facilitating seamless communication between the meters and DEP’s central systems.
