Sacramento Regional Transit (SacRT) is planning to install AI-powered cameras on up to 100 buses across the Sacramento area to enforce parking laws at bus stops. The initiative partners with Hayden AI, a California-based firm, to utilize artificial intelligence for identifying vehicles improperly parked at transit stops. These cameras will capture footage of potential violations, which will then be reviewed by Sacramento city officials before any fines are issued.

The newly launched Bus Stop Enforcement Program aims to enhance safety, accessibility, and the reliability of transit services for both passengers and drivers. The program will enter a 60-day phase where violations detected by the cameras will result in warning notices sent to drivers. From February 18 onwards, actual citations with fines will be issued. Additionally, SacRT plans to expand the camera system to monitor and enforce laws against vehicles blocking bike lanes by late 2025.

Revenue generated from the fines will be allocated with half going to the city, 25% to SacRT, and the remaining 25% to Hayden AI and Duncan Solutions, the contractors managing the service. Only designated parking enforcement officers will review the camera evidence, ensuring that the city’s parking division, not Hayden AI, is responsible for issuing tickets. During a summer trial spanning 70 days on two routes, SacRT recorded 286 cases of vehicles obstructing bus stops.
