Starting July 1, Santa Monica will use AI-powered cameras on buses to automatically detect and ticket vehicles illegally parked in bus lanes. The move is part of the city’s broader effort to enhance traffic management and public transit efficiency.

The system, developed by Hayden AI, uses computer vision to identify violations, which are then reviewed by officials before citations are issued. A recent 45-day pilot on Lincoln Boulevard recorded 511 violations, with the highest number near Grant Street.

Similar programs in other cities, such as New York and Los Angeles, have reported faster bus speeds and fewer collisions. Santa Monica’s initiative will begin with a warning period before full enforcement takes effect. Revenue from fines will fund transit and safety improvements.

The cameras do not use facial recognition and focus solely on vehicle infractions. The city is also testing AI surveillance in downtown areas to monitor crime hotspots.
