Southern California Edison (SCE) and NVIDIA have joined forces in an “intelligent grid collaboration” to leverage AI in tackling complex grid challenges. With rising demand and the integration of decentralized resources, the partnership will focus on smarter, more affordable grid solutions at scale. Expected outcomes include enhanced interconnection of customer loads, improved asset and vegetation management, and advanced incident response before, during, and after power disruptions.
The collaboration’s aims to ensure a resilient, reliable, and cost-effective grid to meet growing customer needs. Edison’s analysis highlights a 35% faster growth in electricity demand over the next decade, prompting the need for sustainable infrastructure and affordable carbon-free resources, such as renewables with storage and next-gen geothermal energy.
NVIDIA’s involvement, with tools like the Jetson AI platform and Omniverse digital twins, will help SCE manage data-intensive tasks at scale, from real-time grid optimizations to extensive network planning.
The partnership could serve as a blueprint for other utilities, offering scalable and replicable digital solutions for decarbonization and electrification. Pilot demonstrations are planned within the year, with long-term outcomes expected to lower costs, improve reliability, and accelerate the transition to a sustainable energy system.
