SEALSQ has secured a multi-year, multi-million-dollar agreement to supply its VaultIC 408 secure microcontroller for millions of smart meters in the United Kingdom’s Smart Metering Implementation Programme (SMIP). The project aims to install smart meters in over 26 million homes and businesses.
The integration of SEALSQ’s VaultIC 408 secure microcontrollers into millions of UK smart meters is a technological upgrade that reflects broader efforts to future-proof the nation’s energy infrastructure. The shift comes as 4G communication hubs begin replacing older 2G and 3G systems, a proactive move to address the impending sunsetting of legacy networks.
The collaboration brings together key energy and technology players, including Landis+Gyr, Calisen, Toshiba and Vodafone, highlighting the importance of secure and interoperable systems in achieving the UK’s ambitious smart metering goals.
VaultIC 408 was selected for its FIPS 140-3 and CC EAL 5+ certifications, providing robust protection against emerging cybersecurity threats and ensuring secure, seamless communication across the metering infrastructure. The secure microcontroller will work in tandem with 4G hubs manufactured by Toshiba and supported by connectivity from Vodafone, to offer improved operational efficiency and enhanced data protection.
This security upgrade appears to be partially driven by regulatory and policy objectives, including compliance with the UK government’s focus on energy security and consumer empowerment. The government’s 2024 update revealed that 37 million smart and advanced meters are already in operation, with 33.2 million connected to the Data Communications Company (DCC) network. New installations are advancing rapidly, with over 11,300 meters being connected daily.
This security enhancement underscores the role of secure technology in aligning with policy mandates while paving the way for smarter, more resilient energy systems.
