Shropshire Council’s River Severn Partnership Advanced Wireless Innovation Region (RSPAWIR) has introduced smart water tanks to help manage flooding risks. A 10,000-litre tank has been installed at Rheinmetall BAE Systems in Telford, using wireless technology to monitor and control water levels.

The system collects rainwater from rooftops for industrial use and can release stored water before heavy rainfall, easing pressure on drainage systems. The project, backed by £4 million in government funding, also involves collaboration with local farmers to test similar flood prevention methods in rural areas.

Authorities plan to expand the initiative to other businesses in the region with large roof spaces. The goal is to demonstrate how smart water storage can benefit both industrial and agricultural sectors in flood-prone areas.
