Spanish water meter company Hidroconta has delivered more than 100,000 smart water devices under the first phase of Spain’s PERTE economic recovery program. The initiative, launched in 2021, aims to modernize water infrastructure with digital solutions.
Among the 30 funded projects, utilities such as Cartagena’s Hidrogea and Ourense’s AquaOurense are implementing smart metering systems. Hidrogea plans to equip 70% of its domestic customers with smart meters, while AquaOurense will install over 63,000 devices.
Hidroconta is supplying NB-IoT-based smart meters and retrofittable communication modules to enhance water management efficiency. The PERTE program has allocated €200 million for water cycle digitalization, with additional funding rounds ongoing.
A second call in 2023 awarded €300 million to 50 projects, and a third phase opened in January 2025 with a €50 million budget. Separate funding is also being directed toward irrigation digitalization efforts.
