The city of Trieste has partnered with Edison Next to upgrade its public system. This comprehensive 13-year project will upgrade over 20,000 lighting points to LEDs, add 400 new points, convert 1,100 fixtures into decorative lights, and install adaptive systems on over 700 points, with a point-to-point telecontrol system on more than 19,000 points. Additionally, 295 electrical panels will be updated to support advanced remote management, enhancing energy efficiency and sustainability.

The initiative that covers a 84 square kilometer area, aims to reduce energy consumption by over 70% compared to 2023, decrease CO2 emissions by about 3,900 tons annually, benefiting approximately 200,000 residents.

Furthermore, the project incorporates smart city elements such as modernizing the existing control room at the S. Sebastiano Barracks, implementing over 200 video surveillance and license plate reading systems, air quality and weather monitoring stations, a smart parking system for disabled spaces, new Wi-Fi hotspots and electric vehicle charging stations.

Urban mobility will also be enhanced with 50 illuminated pedestrian crossings, 66 traffic light controllers, 40 vehicular traffic analysis systems, and accessibility improvements at 38 intersections. Additionally, architectural lighting will illuminate 15 key sites, including Piazza Unità d’Italia and San Giusto Castle, with 470 specialized projectors and lighting devices. This ambitious project not only aims for significant energy savings but also enhances safety, accessibility, and the aesthetic appeal of Trieste.
