Xcel Energy has partnered with Pano AI to deploy over 50 AI-enabled camera stations across nearly a dozen counties, including Garza, Cochran, and Yoakum, to enhance wildfire detection and prevention efforts. The cameras, equipped with 360-degree video capabilities, will provide real-time monitoring of high-risk areas. When a fire is detected, the system enables human verification, precise location identification, and immediate notification to 911, ensuring swift dispatch of first responders. Fire departments will also have access to live camera feeds for improved situational awareness.

The initiative, expected to be completed by 2025, comes as Xcel Energy works to mitigate wildfire risks in the South Plains and beyond. Pano AI is currently identifying optimal camera locations in areas with the highest fire risk. This proactive approach aims to prevent devastating incidents like the 2023 Smokehouse Creek Fire, for which Xcel accepted responsibility. The fire, caused by downed power lines, burned over a million acres—the largest wildfire in Texas history—and contributed to economic losses exceeding $1 billion.
