Genoa is set to introduce an advanced smart mobility system by April 2025, utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) and smart cameras to monitor and optimize traffic flow in real time. Funded by Autostrade per l’Italia, the initiative aims to reduce congestion, prevent traffic jams, and enhance urban mobility.

The project includes the installation of over 200 cameras at key city access points, such as motorway toll booths and major roads, alongside upgrades to traffic light software and restricted traffic zone monitoring systems. The AI-driven technology should enable dynamic adjustments to traffic light timings, prioritize public transport, and provide data for a planned smartphone app. The app is expected to offer real-time route optimization, parking availability, and loading zone information for couriers.

Additionally, the system will feature live license plate recognition, which will be shared with law enforcement for security purposes. Installation is already underway and is expected to be completed within two months. Aster and Movyon a subsidiary of Autostrade per l’Italia, have been named as key vendors contributing to the development of this project.
