East Riding of Yorkshire Council has launched a 12-week pilot scheme using AI-powered CCTV to monitor and deter roadside littering.
The trial, conducted in partnership with Wakefield-based firm LitterCam, involves installing a smart camera near a high-traffic area with nearby fast-food outlets.
The system identifies vehicles discarding waste and sends footage to council enforcement teams for review. While only warning letters will be issued during the trial, the project aims to gather data on littering behaviour. If successful, the council may expand the initiative to other hotspots to address the region’s £4.36 million annual litter cleanup cost.
