AMP Expands Waste-Sorting Reach with RDS Portsmouth Acquisition

AMP Robotics Corporation has purchased the Portsmouth operations of RDS of Virginia, integrating a recycling and sorting facility in South Hampton Roads formerly operated by RDS.

The facility currently houses an AI-powered “AMP ONE” system, capable of processing up to 150 tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) per day with more than 90 % uptime. This system separates recyclables and organics from mixed waste and—when combined with a downstream organics management system—can divert over half of landfill-bound material.

RDS’s existing operations include a single-stream recycling line, which AMP intends to scale toward mixed-waste robotic processing. The acquisition marks AMP’s continued shift from technology supplier toward facility operator.

Though AMP has not disclosed the acquisition price, the company last raised USD 91 million in a Series D financing round in late 2024, which it plans to channel into deployment of AMP ONE systems and expansion in municipal solid waste sorting.

This move also aligns with regional waste authority strategy: in Virginia, the Southeastern Public Service Authority is finalizing a long-term contract with a newly formed partnership (Commonwealth Sortation), tied to AMP and RDS, to modernize waste handling for multiple jurisdictions. The plan includes a $100 million investment to expand the pilot facility and build a new sorting capacity.
