The City of Atlanta has unveiled plans to deploy 500 AI-operated devices across Midtown and the Westside to proactively detect and alert officials of water main leaks. This initiative, an expansion from a pilot program that initially included 20 devices, aims to tackle the frequent water main breaks and enhance the city’s response to water emergencies. According to Al Wiggins, Commissioner of Atlanta’s Department of Watershed Management, the devices will cover a 35-mile area and are capable of identifying the location and severity of leaks through inter-device communication based on vibrations. The city, which recently experienced a significant water emergency lasting six days, will start the installations soon, with a substantial number expected to be operational by next week. The vendor providing the devices has not been disclosed.
