Barcelona has launched a six-month pilot project using AI-powered cameras on four buses operating the H12 and D20 routes. The system, developed by Hayden AI, detects vehicles obstructing bus lanes and stops, aiming to improve bus service efficiency. The initiative, funded by Barcelona City Council in collaboration with TMB and Fira de Barcelona, is part of the Barcelona Innova Lab Mobility program.
The cameras capture photos and video sequences to gather traffic infringement data but do not record license plates or individuals. No fines are currently being issued. TMB is evaluating the system for potential fleet-wide implementation and future enforcement use.
According to the Barcelona City Council trial marks the largest deployment of such automated systems on buses in Europe, aligning with efforts to address traffic violations in bus lanes. A similar enforcement initiative has been in place since May last year.
