The municipality of Brescia in Italy has launched the “City Plug Lamp” pilot project, an initiative by A2A that transforms street lamps into multifunctional hubs. These hubs combine energy-efficient LED lighting with electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, optimizing existing urban infrastructure to support sustainable mobility and the energy transition.

The project, located near the Brescia Due metro stop, features eight City Plug Lamp poles equipped with 14 LED lights and 16 EV charging sockets. Funded entirely by A2A Illuminazione Pubblica in collaboration with A2A E-Mobility, the pilot will run for five years, with potential for extension and expansion to other city areas.

The project, which has a total value of 100,000 euros and an initial duration of five years, is part of the public lighting redevelopment plan that began in 2016 with the replacement of 43,000 light fixtures with LEDs, reducing energy consumption by 40% and cutting 2,700 tons of CO2 annually. In 2023, the city introduced its first smart charging columns, designed for widespread use without reserved spaces. Today, Brescia boasts over 250 A2A charging points, with more planned in the coming months.

The City Plug Lamp project highlights how urban infrastructure can evolve to meet the demands of electric mobility and digitalization. By integrating lighting, EV charging, and potential 5G connectivity, Brescia sets a replicable model for other Italian cities aiming for smarter, more sustainable urban environments.
