Florida-based Coastal Waste & Recycling is piloting an autonomous robot developed by Guident to enhance safety at its Pompano Beach facility. The AI-powered “WatchBot” patrols the site, scanning trucks for elevated temperatures that could signal potential battery fires, a growing concern in the industry due to lithium-ion batteries and e-waste.

In addition to fire detection, the robot also monitors for damage, checks for proper use of protective equipment, and performs routine safety tasks, freeing staff for customer-facing activities.

The pilot aims to assess whether the technology can be expanded to Coastal’s material recovery and transfer stations. Guident, headquartered nearby in Boca Raton, custom-built the system in collaboration with Coastal and has deployed similar technology in airports and the oil and gas sector.
