Connecticut is set to enhance its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure through a partnership with Voltpost, a company specializing in retrofitting lampposts into EV charging stations. The initiative, approved by the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA), will deploy 50 charging stations with 100 ports across the state over the next 18 months, aiming to address the growing demand for EV infrastructure.
The project, expected to be completed by Q4 2026, will focus on providing faster, cost-effective, and eco-friendly charging solutions. Notably, 20% of the chargers will be installed in disadvantaged communities, contributing to an estimated annual reduction of 200 metric tons of carbon emissions.
Voltpost’s modular platform utilizes existing lampposts for Level 2 charging, significantly reducing deployment time and costs. The initiative aligns with Connecticut’s goal of transitioning state fleets to electric vehicles by 2030. Currently, only 1.2% of registered vehicles in the state are electric, highlighting the urgent need for expanded charging infrastructure.
The project involves collaboration with key partners, including Eversource, United Illuminating, Capitol Clean Cities, and Live Green Connecticut. Local, W/MBE-certified businesses will handle installations.
