CSignum, a wireless technology company specializing in underwater and underground IoT communications, has secured £6 million in Series A funding. The round was led by Archangels, Par Equity, and Scottish Enterprise, with participation from British Business Investment, Raptor Group, and others.
Founded in 2020, CSignum develops EM-2 solutions using patented electromagnetic field signaling (EMFS) to transmit data through water, ice, soil, rock, and concrete—a capability unmatched by existing wireless technologies.
The company’s systems support applications such as water quality monitoring, underwater infrastructure security, and environmental compliance. Its CSignum Cloud platform provides analytics for real-time data processing.
According to CSignum, its EM-2 platform enables water quality monitoring by overcoming the inability of traditional wireless signals to transmit through water. Their patented EMFS technology generates low-frequency electromagnetic fields that propagate through conductive and non-conductive media—such as saltwater or turbid freshwater—without relying on acoustic or optical signals, which often suffer from interference, short range, or high latency.
This allows sensors to be placed in hard-to-reach submerged locations (like wells, aquifers, rivers, or reservoirs) and transmit critical data—such as pH, turbidity, temperature, and contaminant levels—directly to receivers on the surface or embedded in infrastructure. These readings are processed and visualized in the CSignum Cloud, enabling operators to monitor environmental parameters continuously and respond to pollution events or noncompliance risks in near real-time.
With increasing regulatory demands, including AMP8 initiatives, CSignum aims to expand its engineering team and enhance its product offerings to meet global market needs. The funding will support scaling operations and strengthening its position in the underwater IoT sector.
