Denton Water Utilities is initiating a pilot project to deploy digital water meters across various locations in the city over the next six to 12 months. The pilot, contracted at about USD 614,000, is intended to test advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) for leak detection and usage monitoring.
The city currently operates roughly 42,000 water meters and projects that a full system-wide conversion would cost near USD 20 million, funding for which is expected to be sought via low-interest financing mechanisms under the Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act.
Denton Municipal Electric (DME) previously invested about USD 12 million in digital electric meters for all customers, rolling that project out in phases from 2010 to 2015.
During the pilot, performance metrics such as billing accuracy, data integrity, and system reliability will be assessed. If successful, Denton may proceed to broader deployment and phase out its current third-party meter reading contract.
