A new drone inspection pilot program has been launched in Detroit to assess municipal buildings for energy efficiency improvements. The initiative, led by Lamarr.AI in collaboration with Michigan Central and Newlab, is supported by Michigan’s Advanced Aerial Mobility Activation Fund.

Using thermal imaging and AI-powered analytics, the drones will identify structural inefficiencies and potential energy-saving upgrades in selected city-owned facilities. Data collected should help optimize building performance and support Detroit’s sustainability goals.

The project operates under the Advanced Aerial Innovation Region (AAIR), a testing ground for drone technology at Michigan Central. Initial inspections at two Detroit buildings revealed over 460 thermal deficiencies, with potential HVAC energy savings of up to 22%. Recommendations include insulation improvements, window replacements, and roof enhancements. AAIR integrates airspace management tools and public-private partnerships to enable scalable drone deployments in urban environments.
